about

Phraim. Nothing about his artistry is ever straightforward be it audio, visual or otherwise. Even the brevity of song he’s come to exhibit is an intentional response to the circumstantial. Less reactionary. Increasingly raw.

Within this, his eighth full-length offering, he’s siphoned every project produced since his origin album, Silver Lined and sought to give listeners selections that could breathe, perfectly, within his catalog at different points in the past decade-plus run of releases.

Comprised of 18 tracks total (three hidden bonuses for purchasing supporters), 31213 is yet another of Phraim’s emotion-peppered sonic escapades. You might wonder what makes this one different from any of his others. Perhaps the most significant answer is that it’s possibly his last under the moniker; a swan-song of sorts.

Majestically, the intro Sienna signals a sort of summit-moment as the artist looks to establish having peaked as highly as possible on this particular production plane. Considerations for influence include Marvin Gaye’s 80’s TR-808 driven “Sexual Healing” and Phraim’s having began the track overlooking mountain ranges via flights westward.

He immediately falls into push-pull brush strokes of Inevitability Clauses. Forged in the mindset of acceptance that one knows nothing, he admittedly knows it all. “What goes up must come down in rattling fashion” he denotes via destructive sub frequencies. “What will be will be” is the mantra.

WEclipsed marries grand piano chords with contrasting drums. The artist chooses to allow sustain and reverb of the keys to linger in gaps while providing subtle synth accents, further establishing his sound. Raynebloh, a colorful ode to after rain moments which succeed stormy weather follows fittingly.

The string trills of PROposition signal excavation of Kasbah Moments, Phraim’s sophomore album that embodied the essence of Moroccan days and Arabian nights. ARAGON features similar employing of violin, continuing as a canvas begging for lyrical tales of those who woke and chose beautiful violence over everything.

Doze Wurdz, the LP’s lengthiest track, soothingly arrives at the album’s 7th spot. An homage to the amorous in the formula of an influential fellow beat maker its notes include: Nag Champa smoke, practical pinches of patience, a triangle or two and zills/sājāt (finger cymbals).

The bouncy and bright tracks of Itchy Palm’d Sin’n Saint and Early Grey are nods to Phraim’s perhaps most eclectic sample and synth driven soundtrack, Scars To Prove It (STPI). Built in Chicago for live performance, their freshly roasted texture surprise and delight. The latter is a not-so-simple ode to the never forgotten bliss of a carefree kid with a pocket full of arcade tokens.

In contrast, Feverish, with its pulsing toms, and the healthy Core So Solid score a walkthrough of adult club settings from velvet ropes to VIP rooms. Low lights and longing gazes. VSOP to vectors unknown.

Truck Jewel No. 79 is a forever southsider’s gem. Big body trunk knocks and neck-break head-nods make this selection a reservoir for fortified metaphor laden flows.

Broken amps and overdriven frequency establish the groundwork for ELessDee. Nearly smothered by snappy drums, the track picks up where the last concluded like I-94 connects to Lake Shore Drive.

The track Congé Français speaks “farewell” in a natural unapologetic fashion that balances synth highs and lows that dance over tripped-up kicks and throttling hats.

Freekwindsea is Exhibit A of the musicians ability to massage 61-keys. Having first been inspired by the living room’s upright piano and uncle’s drum kit, it’s a fitting finale. Forever Phraim.
