about

Phraim’s latest album, Rwenzori, is aptly named. Like the mountains in eastern equatorial Africa, these tracks stand tall and firmly rooted. The album is decidedly concise and each track reserves the right to shift directions. While the listener longs to ride its sonic waves endlessly, Rwenzori is intentional about expressing what needs expression and letting that need take a natural course and conclusion. There is a lot to be said for a project that leaves you wanting more.

Rwenzori’s timing, hard on the heels of a wild and wayward 2020, is notable. The artist masters not only a fitting soundtrack but also personal and collective struggles. The track “Vixious Cykelz” captures this perfectly, interspersed with the sound of a distressed yet determined voice shouting, “Again!”

Tracks with illuminating titles like “Sick Issue” and “Kritikal Khandihshun” ring the alarm in response to threatening circumstances, physically and spiritually, coming quite close to breaking and emerging more solid than ever. This tenacity most clearly comes across in the track, “Wild Button” – a sophisticated constellation of connecting moments and movements. The spirit of liberation is undeniable throughout.

“Transparently,” a deceptively simple, straightforward track oozes with the complexity of seemingly contradictory elements that flow well together. Each sound is distinct and stands out while never losing the harmony. Although self-sufficient, there is a recognition of the power of the collective as Phraim is content to let the art win. And Rwenzori is the ultimate prize.

The fact of internal and external fight is a thematic consistency in Rwenzori. Equally present is the power to free oneself it. In “Chatterproof”, we’re given the BTS into the show. Here we see the artist at ease, effortlessly talented and silencing naysayers with excellence. It’s hard not to root.

This high quality of work is only possible after years of having produced great work. Phraim has put in the work and, worthy of its name, Rwenzori is a mountain of an album.
