about

Midnite Kisses For Ruby Tears, the fourth full-length instrumental project from Phraim, is indeed a senior release of sorts. Though it borrows from heart and technique displayed in past production, the formula of MKFRT is clearly different. Evolved, but grounded. Keen yet simplistic.

The album begins with the artist’s familiar ode to grand-openings, a reoccurring theme. Setting the stage to serve up the unexpected via “I Sure Is A Mystery” he dutifully notifies the listener to prepare for an obscure ride with a track that changes like the wind. The remainder of the record is no less cryptic in nature and far more rhythmic.

Forever a Chicagoan, “D. Rose Gold” pays homage to #1 of the Chicago Bulls with a bass drum kick that bounces throughout the track like a Spaulding off hardwood between legs before blitzing crossover. Phraim juggles keys throughout, orchestrating drops in the mix emphasizing silence in the midst of madness.

Standouts like “Silly Game” and “Nikki Costa Rican” both sonically tell tales and beckon the sharpest lyricist to lend worthy wordplay to complement guitars, organs and vibraphones.

By the midway point, Phraim seeks to liven up his immortalized set with the groovy “Mildest Blaque.” The track is bended, chopped and looped to keep the listener locked in just before he proceeds to break the beat into a head nod frenzy. How can he fail?

“Candlesmoke” helps mellow out the second act with bouncy drums and clipped elements as Phraim sets up his outro entitled “Hopeful Headaches,” a synthesized score of mammoth proportions. We’re left feeling both blessed and broken-hearted by a blistering and blissful offering. We believe you will as well.
